Oxygen Sensor

I replaced the front O2 sensor on my 98 Contour after about 50,000 miles. Now at 85,000 my "check engine" light is on again showing once again the front O2 sensor is faulty. My question is this... can you replace the sensor with one of the universal sensors ? Mine is a 4 wire sensor and I see there are some universal 4 wire sensors available at a reduced cost from OEM models. Also, isnt it strange for the sensor to only last such a short time ?

yes, you can replace it with a universal one.
