type of oil used
I did a search on this and could not find a thread. I have a CBR F4i. What type of oil should I use? I was looking at 10w-40 fully synthetic. Mobil 1 sells for $6 a quart. Any cheaper alternatives?

I didn't say fix, I asked about preventive maintenance. This would include changing oil, brake pads, air filter, radiator fluid, etc. You do do that, right? Or do you wait until your brakes fail, engine seizes etc? Getting off the subject, which was about which type/brand of oil to use.

Here is my suggestion....if its summer weather, use 15w-40 oil intended for diesel engines.
Yes, diesels. Those engines have much greater bearing loads and pressures placed on the oil than gas engines have. The diesel engine oil has a package of anti wear additives that are more effective than those put in gasoline engine oils. These additives are not put in gas engine oils because if the engine starts to burn oil, the additives will coat the inside of the catalytic converter, rendering it ineffective. Since your bike has no cat ( as far as I know) you will be fine. This is advice from Car & Driver magazine from about 7 years ago. BTW, Aces was being sarcastic

actually this was a very hotly discussed topic quite awhile ago.
a few suggestions in the thread were that cheap oil was fine. any old car oil will do. or that because of the wet clutch, the oil needs to have certain additive to do the job. someone posted an article quoting test results from many american sources. my opinion is that i spent $15000 AUS on my bike, $50 in oil twice a year for the "good stuff" that appears to make my bike perform quite well is a small sacrifice. if on a tight budget this could be dropped to about $20 AUS for the "cheap stuff" word of warning though.we were using Mobil 1 in a close friends car that was on a track day. it became quite viscous and ended up moving too much in corners and his bottom end bearings got dry. f'ed his motor.

Personally, I go with whatever the manufacturer recommends. Obviously, they are not going to lead you in the wrong direction. The did after all manufacture the bike and they do know best...
...just my opinion on it.

i've been using castrol 10w-40 for my bike and there has been no problems at all. the other forum which i go to, riders also have been using regular car oil for +20k miles now and still counting. just make sure its not an energy conserving oil and u will be fine.
