busted tranny

whats up all, have a question, i have a friend with an 04 wrx, he bought it used with 14,000 miles. he has (i think) falken azenis tires all around. so what he did was come to a complete stop, rev the engine to 5k then dumped the clutch and it went CLUNK! so my question is, did this happen because the tranny was/is crap, maybe abused by the previous owner, or did he just do a stupid thing because of the AWD? he is under the impression that the subaru tranny is inherently crappy and wants to sell it but if it isn't he needs to know that he abused it.

thanks

Re: busted tranny

Subaru trannies aren't the greatest, but it shouldn't die on you at 14k. It has probably been abused, but it sounds to me like your friend is an abuser too, so it was just a matter of time anyway.

Sounds to me like your friend abuses it......yes, he did a stupid thing.

Subaru trannies are good if you don't beat the car, which your friend evidently is doing.

Re: busted tranny

dude, you dont get that dumping the clutch in any car much less an AWD tran is the worst thing you can do? Your friend was probably a habitual dumper trying to spin the tires.... tsk tsk.

Re: busted tranny

when you dump the clutch the rear differential gets shocked as well as the rear driveshaft. these to parts are the ones making that noise. doesnt usually happen to wrx cause they dont have as much torque but STi' suffer from this. you always ride the clutch on a AWD launch.

Re: busted tranny

Well for RWD/FWD it's not AS important to ride the clutch since extra power can be lost during the burnout and won't do as much damage to the drivetrain.

I think all the guy meant is that it's especially important to do so on an AWD platform.

Re: busted tranny

that's def. a beat to shit transmission. I've got a 2.5 RS that has been through countless rally-x's, auto-x's, an aftermarket turbo kit, trips to the drag strip, let along all the abuse i've given it day to day. WHich is alot. At 82,xxx miles, the tranny has yet to show signs of age.

Maybe i got a wednesday built car....but i just think it's the way i drive. You can beat the shit out of subaru's, you just have to do it gently? lol

I have, however, gone through 4 clutches.
