1995 MPV low torque issues

My newly acquired '95 4wd MP seems very sluggish (spongey) off the line and the accelerator is not very responsive. Engine runs to higher rpm's prior to shifting as well. Is this common or am correct in thinking something is wrong.
By comparison, my '89 2wd seems to be much more snappy (as can be for a minivan) and far more responsive when I step on the gas.
Thoughts on remedies?
