how bad is cv axle?

My crapalier needs more love this week...last 6 weekends ongoing. Anyway, I know it's my cv axle. Had this problem with another car, it clicks slightly if I back up and turn quickly. It wanders like crazy on uneven pavement, and it bangs and clunks on every single little bump in the road...Problem is I don't get paid till 4 days from now. And I'm starting a new job which is 45 kms there and 45 back? Should I risk it? My other car with a bad driveshaft went for 6 months like this till somebody finally told me how dangerous it could be? But it was "jumping" at highway speeds and clicked like crazy everytime I turned hard or not. Anybody pushed the chevy parts this far? I have a Ford, which is at the dealership till the weekend.
And exactly what happens when they go?

Re: how bad is cv axle?

Funny you should ask this....

I have the same problem sadly from when i made a really bad mistake and used a shitty suspension products but thats another story. But that clicking is a definate sign they are shot. You have a choice as to wheather to get them rebuilt or buy new ones. When i accelerate my whole front end tends to shudder and at high speeds my passenger side feels like it has a wobble really bad. Now i cannot tell if mine are clicking over my exhaust and engine noise and interrior ratteling from my solid engine mounts. But i have going almost a year on mine now. I never knew what was causing my problems. But so far i have a new $1,000 suspension setup, new tires, and new hub assemblys. Only things left to change are tie rods or the cv shafts. But i think its the half shafts. Also the vibrations get worse when i get more people in the car. Which changes the angles of the joints.. But i would get them changed when you can. I am short money too.

I think mine might be starting to go, I went out today to go to school and came up to a corner and turned the wheel while stopping then hit the gas after I was stopped with the wheel turned to the right and the car made a clanking noise for a couple seconds and me engine light and ets off light both came on. But it didn't do it again on the way home.

Your engine light came on? I dunno if that would be the cv axle's.Maybe your motor mounts are broken? I had a problem with my strut bearing's going and the car did the same thing as your's without the light coming on though. I don't know much about car's, but my brother's do. Thought they hate working on mine cause their into the honda's. I just asked him and he said it sounds like your mounts. Hope its nothing major. Damn chevy's! I've spent 1500 on mine in the last month and that's all used parts too dammit.

Re: how bad is cv axle?

I bought my car for $1100 and have put about $1700 into it so I'm just under $3000CDN which isn't that bad. But I've had too many problems, so it's gone this week I'm hoping.
