Air Bag Light

Probably has been asked a million times, but ... I have an '01 model and my air bag light turned on recently. Is there any way to fix it yourself or I have to go to the dealer. Also everyone is talking about just turning off the light, but what if there something actually wrong with the air bag itself? Thanks in advance.

Re: Air Bag Light

I had an airbag light on once in a Taurus and I decided not to mess with it because the repair manual said that it could discharge accidently. Maybe there is a code that might be more specific on the problem with it. Autozone will read the codes for free. Could be a bad sensor under the hood. In my case, I had a bad clock spring-whatever that is. It was in the steering wheel. Fixed that and in about 6 months the light was back on again. It stayed on for years after that and was still on when I sold it. Airbags can be pretty important when you need them.

There probably is a code. But AutoZone does not have the necessary equipment to read airbag codes. Those scanners are rather special, and hard to come buy (expensive, and there is a lot of liability involved in servicing SIR systems). Some shops won't even tell you what the code is, for fear of lawsuits...
