Tach and speedometer NEED HELP

hey guys i got a question

ok its a 2000 wrangler cj
heres the problem....when driving yesterday, the speedometer and tachometer stopped working. The car ran fine, but the tach and speedomoter were both at zero and not working. Would this be a problem with the fuses possibly?? I dont know a whole lot about electrical, so does anyone have ideas of what the problem could be??

thanks in advance

99 and 00 models have that quirk sometimes. Assuming the gauges came back, first place to check is all the connections going to the cluster, under the dash.

If they stayed out, then check fuses.

My 1999 does that. It's a wire inside the dash. I just hit the top of the dash when I need to know how fast I'm going...otherwise I dont' worry about it.

Re: Tach and speedometer NEED HELP

just start hitting the thing. otherwise get a GPS unit and stick it on dash. i go by feel so I dont need tach to change gears. I am a canuck (canadian) I go by Km/h, my jeep is american imported to canuck land. I can judge speed accurately, but I need a new speedo. I am buying a GPS, sticking it right in center so I can see it clearly. I also think it will be good for the trails. I will be buying a top of the line model. Also having a digital readout of speed reduces my chances of getting ANOTHER speeding ticket. Another thing to add on my rig is cruise control, another cheap add on to control my heavy foot.

Sorry to poke fun, but wow, I didn't know jeep was making a CJ again. You drive a TJ dude.

Cj wasn't built after 1986

Yj wasn't built after 1995

Wire inside the dash? Grounding wire? Power wire? Did the dealer tell you this or have you been able to repair it once? I think this is a widespread problem with Jeep products as I have read (and am having) the same problem on a 98 Jeep, and the 97 was recalled for bad grounding to the dash.

Re: Tach and speedometer NEED HELP

Bad grounding really messes things up. Cuases alot of mysterious things to happen. Pull the dash and make sure all ground wires are securely mounted.

Re: Tach and speedometer NEED HELP

It could be the printed circuit you will have to pull the dash and check continuity from the plug to the tach and speedo connections.
