Talking Best Race EVER!

Wow, best race ever!

Who would of thought, a Corvair would of been the race I had the most fun with? Honestly, it was that badass.

She was boosted, had some nice wheels, good paint. Sounded bitchin too!

Getting onto the freeway coming home from my buddies place, this Corvair passes me and almost gets sideswipped by the truck infront of me not paying attention and not 'merging' onto the freeway.

So for a split second I get to see him get on it. It squirted along pretty good. Once I got past the truck in front of me I speed up and slowly catch up to the Corvair. When I got within 3 car lengths of him I noticed something odd.

Hanging from the A-pillar were some guages, which is most commonly a boost gauge. SHIT! I think, that thing is boosted!

He sees me pulling up and him and I pick our way through traffic. I got a bit ahead of him and he guns it, I see in my rear view all the black smoke/unburnt gas being dumped out. Which is common when you first hit the gas in a turbo car.

I knew at that time he was for sure boosted, and for sure going for it. We pulled about dead even then had to let off cause of traffic.

Once past that, I was ahead 3 cars and he came around traffic I saw him beatin cheeks to catch back up and was closing in on me fast. So I guaged his acceleration, and punched it in 5th. I didn't downshift, cause I was alread going 90mph... and I wanted there to be a slight delay so he'd catch up right about as I hit boost.

Well, I was right.. he gets right to my door and we tear off down the freeway. We both stay in it till I hit my rev limitor which is about 135-140mph. He was at my rear bumper, so I had gained a bit on him.

I hit the limitor and hit the brakes fairly hard to show him that I'd let off for sure. He'd let off as well, we both coast side by side down to sane speeds again and we both keep giving each other thumbs up.

If I could of gotten my passenger window down, I'd ask him what he had done, and if he'd like to pull off the freeway and chat. But it was late (midnight). We both cruised with each other for the remainder of our freeway trip.

My exit came up and I put my driver window down and gave him a big thumbs up, he did the same back and hit the throttle for a quick bit. As a small salute maybe? hehe...

By far the fastest thing I've raced on the freeway to date. Surely a badass little Corvair! I can only imagine what people were thinking as we flew past them going 130mph... especially seeing it's an old Datsun and some old Corvair... what an odd race pair!

For those of you who are clueless... this is what a Corvair looks like:

1966 Chevrolet Corvair
Corsa Turbocharged Coupe
The Last Year For The Turbo Engine Option
One of 1,951 Manufactured in 1966
180 Horsepower @ 4000rpm, 265 Torque @ 3200rpm
Opposed Flat 6 Cylinder Air Cooled Engine
Saginaw 4-Speed Transmission

I believe it was a '66... it looked similar to this except it was a dark red/maroon color.

Fun times, cool cars!

Re: Best Race EVER!

Thats sick! Id love to race a Corvair, win or lose your taking on a rare and classic car

and did you know that the corvair was a pretty hot car in the 60's until, one political activist made public a false rumor that the Corvair was extremely unsafe at speeds above 50...even though it was proven false later, ppl stopped buying it and they phased out the car

The activists name? Ralph Nader

It seems they do it when you mash the gas and the motor/turbo aren't spining fast enough. Like, for me it'll happen just below boost... cause you're dumping so much fuel through the motor.

I don't do it very much, just a little puff and it's done. But those with large injectors and big ol turbos. You'll see a nice big black puff come out before the turbo kicks in and they take off.

I had video of my car spitting the puff out on the freeway, racing some Integra. Well, my friend had video of it... I guess I never got a copy. I just checked... rather dissapointing. Cause my friends were in a MiniVan following and were all cheering and screaming.

Cause you have sense of style that's why. No flare for rare cars, even rare'r to be tricked out.

And stop hitting Enter 129 times with just a stupid smilie at the bottom. Everyonce in a while is fine... but you do it all the time. It gets annoying having to scroll for half an hour to get past your post.

Re: Best Race EVER!

5/100 Times really is alot isn't it? (That's just what I saw by checking through my profile. Settle down Red. You know I joke alot. And of course, I was joking.

I do have a flare for rare cars. I really just don't see enough of them. Although, when I do, then yes, I do show my interest quite much. Good race for you. Glad you had fun.
