Question 99 Ranger Speedometer stopped working

Just yesterday my ABS light came on, the overdrive stopped working properly(changes gear with a kick) and my speedometer stopped. I think it may be the speed sensor, but I was curious to know if anyone knows why else the speedometer would quit on me?(I checked all my fuses and they work properly)

I also have a 99 Ranger and the same thing happened to me this morning. The ABS light is on and the speedometer doesn't work. From what I've read in other posts, it sounds like it is a faulty speed sensor. I noticed that the needle would move sometimes but most of the time it was stuck at 0. I'm assuming that since it does move, the cable is still good. The sensor only costs around $20 so I'm going to replace it and hope it fixes the problem. I'll post again to let you know if it fixed the problem or not.

Thumbs up Speedometer

Please do let me know what happens. Also if successful maybe oyu can tell me how to install myself. The Ford dealer here quoted me a 20$ part, and 100$ plus in labor.

Re: Speedometer

Replacing the speed sensor fixed the problem and it is very simple. It's located on top of the rear differential (aka the pumpkin.) There's one bolt holding it on. You should clean the dirt and rust off around the sensor before pulling it off. The biggest problem I had was finding the right part. The part store sold me the wrong one so I took the old one off and brought it back. Nobody stocks this part except the Ford dealer. I went to 4 different part stores. It cost $20 at Ford but only $11 anywhere else but you have to wait a day for them to order it. I ended up getting it from Ford.
