It did it before you did the cat-back? Burnt valve? Sticking valve? Who knows, what do your plugs look like? Black? Grey? Timing off in your car?

Backfiring caused by unburnt fuel hitting the hot exhaust manifold, your car burning rich? Smell like fuel at the exhaust when ideling? Bad gas mileage? Sticking injector?

First thing I would do is pull the spark plugs and see what they look like, then go from there. Hey, you gotta start someplace.

The whitish/grey smoke is fuel not being burnt (commonly thought to be a blown head gasket, you know the ones, they smoke but no bubbling in the radiators. I love buying those cars, because I fix them for $20). Do all the plugs look the same? If so, put a preasure gage to it and see if your regulator is starting to go out. When they go out for good they go out wide open and your car will smoke like a freight train (not to mention barely run). You can check your regulator with a vacumn pump, it shouldn't move, if it does it's going bad. The preasure gauge is just to see if your pump is pumping to much preasure to the fuel rail. Spec for fuel preasure are in a Haynes or what ever manual you have for your car.

If one of the plugs looks different than the others, you have a stuck injector on that cylinder.
