'02 fan clutch

hello,
how can you tell if your fan clutch is going bad? Sometimes I will notice the truck rev very high while starting off for a few minutes and then the tach goes down and the ride smooths out. Is this thing going bad on me?

On cold starts, I never pull out of the garage until the tach goes down to a normal idle (600-700). Usually when I hear and feel this problem, I will be going about 15-20 mph and the tach will read about 2500rpm and it sounds as if I am riding the clutch...impossible on an automatic. What is going on hear? Anyone else having these problems?

Thanks in advance to all

Scott

Unhappy Re: '02 fan clutch

hey scott,
i completely understand what you are talking about. my husband and i just bought a 2002 trailblazer and we are having the same problem but the dealership will not fix it unless we pay out the butt for it. i have been doing some investigating on recalls and it seems as if this should be a recall because so many people have been having this same problem. if i would have known i would not have bought it. i will be contacting chevrolet in the morning concerning this issue and will keep in contact with you about the response from them if you would like.

take care,
Pam

Re: '02 fan clutch

My Chevy dealer's tech told me that there is nothing wrong with the fan clutch, just need fine tune adjustments to the program control. I would suggest you have your dealer reflash the computer.

'02 fan clutch

I have had the same problem with my trailblazer and I bought it with less than 17 miles on it. The dealership has looked at the fan clutch several times (at least 4) and keeps giving me the same lame excuse, they cannot recreate the same problem when they road test it, it is fine, they all do that, etc. because it is only a problem when the engine is cold, etc. and they will not replace it without me paying for it, even though my car is still under the extended warranty.

It has been 2 1/2 years now and we still have the same problem off and on, the dealership said it was not causing a performance problem with the car and there was not a recall ever issued for it even though they know it is a problem.

If you own a 02 trailblazer, the fan clutch is probably the least of your concerns, there have been 6 other recalls on it that I know of.

And just since March this year I have had to replace both the outer tie rods on the front end with less than 50k miles - which is not covered under the extended warranty I purchased, the catalylic convereter was replaced about 2 months ago because I could not excelerate above 45 miles an hour and apparently it was clogged up - it is covered by factory warranty until 80k miles if you should have this issue, and now my AC seems to be leaking all over the front passenger floorboard as of the last several days.... can't wait to find out what it is this time.

Good luck to you
Tamara
