Turbo kit question

Hey~

I've been looking around on these boards for a long time now, but until now I haven't even had an MR2 so I never bothered to sign up. I've always been a fan, and now that I finally have my dream car I'm looking to give it some added pep.

I was reading a little, and was wondering if anyone knew if HKS made a turbo kit for the 3sgte (I thought I saw a GT2835-based kit, can't find info on it though)? I'm really not up for peicing together a new setup, and I've heard some nasty things about the TD06SH kit that greddy makes. That, and I really like the idea of using a GT2835 as I actually have heard a lot of good reviews on how they perform. I'm not looking to get crazy, just quick. I looked up a few other kits and noticed that they all had some pretty high spool times for my taste as well.

Current mods are as follows:

Gen II JDM swap, 60k
Greddy IC
Blitz BoV

My goal is to push about 275 at the flywheel. I'll let you all know how things go once I start this little project.

Hello Jeff,

If you are looking for only 275 @ the FW, you can accomplish this with the factory turbo (CT26) or you can get a bit more out of your car and be able to pull to redline with the CT20B (another Toyota turbo that bolts right up).

There really isn't a need for an expensive turbo kit to hit 275 FW (about 245 rwhp).

If you decide you want more than that, I would not suggest a the GT28 (or variations) for the MR2. I would suggest the TD06 kit that ATS Racing makes (click my signature) or one of the T3/T4 kits that are out there.

You did not mention intake & exhaust in your mod list. You can pick up some healthy power with those mods. Also a boost controller will give you a big smile if you push up to 15 psi.

I would suggest getting rid of the Blitz BOV and putting the factory valve back on.

I was reading up on that CT20B, they seem pretty hard to come by. That and I'm usually pretty weary about purchasing old parts.

The main reason for me wanting to get something Greddy/HKS etc. is because I get jobber pricing on name brands, so it'd save me a bit. I'm not totally against getting a custom setup though, as I've seen some decently priced stuff out there.

I would definitely like to see what I could do with a CT20B however. Does it really just bolt up or would I need to fab something? I just moved from out of state so all of my car buddies aren't around anymore, I'm all by my lonesome as far as getting custom work goes now :\

As far as the BOV is concerned, is there something bad about the blitz BOV? I don't have the stock one anymore but if there is something bad about this one or if it was recalled I'd definitely not want it on my car.

what state do you live in? im trying to find a mr2 right now and i want to do an engine swap for the third gen and dont know the legalities since i live in CA and they have stupid laws any info on legalitys would be a big thanks coming from me! thanks!!

The CT20B directly botls up ~ no modifications needed.

Aftermarket BOVs rob some level of performance. They are just noise makers. The OEM valve is the best performance valve you can have in there.

Ahh, I just looked up a really old thread that asked the same question, you answered it perfectly. After reading up some more on the internet I definitely see the reason to use the OEM *or* HKS if you like the sounds.

I live in California. Currently the car passess emissions just fine, however I'm not sure if it would if I were to remove the first cat and go with a new turbo setup. What I might end up doing is buying a hi-flow cat and seeing if I can't get them to cut down the ends/extend it to fit. I'm going to look it up, find some dimensions and ask around. I'll let you know what I find out.

Another thing I am looking into is how to go about using an external wastegate as well. I'm guessing after I install all my bolt ons and whatnot I'll start getting a bit of creep with the internal wastegate, and I'm way too picky about my cars to not have it running as safely as possible. Before I do anything I'm even looking into those SPAL fans, 2 for the hood and 2 for the IC. Especially living where you drive around in 100 degree weather, it's just a nice thing to have.

so you dont have any problems with insurance or registration or anything since you have a second gen jdm engine swap? cause ive been wanting to do that to an mr2 but didnt know if it would be legal. did you swap it into a na or an already origanal turbo car?
