HELP! Knocking sound under my car when brakes are applied

I have an '88 camaro- When i apply the brakes (while moving) or when i switch my car into reverse-a LOUD knocking sound comes from the undercarriage of my car,
i poked around a bit to try and figure out whats making the sound, and there is a long bar that reaches to the rear axle its tapers off near the rear and the end is set in a kind of harness (i guess)

heres a diagram: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y13...ng/problem.bmp

but i dont know if something is missing on the end of that bar - i dont think its supposed to be lose like that, and i am positive that is the cause of the noise, what is that bar called?
PLEASE help.

i hve an 88 camaro too and that bar on mine isnt loose. like i cant wiggle it with my hand, can you? umm it might be bad universal joints(?) on the drive shaft for the reverse clunk thing.

Re: HELP! Knocking sound under my car when brakes are applied

i can move mine about 1-2 inches up and then back down so it rests in that harness thing but it bangts around quite a bit when i slow down

is there something on the tapered end of yours holding it still in that harness? is something missing on mine?

Re: HELP! Knocking sound under my car when brakes are applied

you need a new torque bar bushing. its the rubber pad that holds the front end of the torque bar to the transmission. if that brakes, it will make the sound you ar talking about.

Re: HELP! Knocking sound under my car when brakes are applied

ok just checked and i cant move mine at all. the big end it bolted directly onto the rearend ant the then other smaller end is bolted into a little harness on the engine with rubber lining so its tight but it pivots.

Re: HELP! Knocking sound under my car when brakes are applied

torque bar bushing or tranny mount....I had a similar problem after a guy who i let drive my car did a small neutral drop before i could scream in horror and it separated the mount and from then on id a thud from the tranny jumping up and hitting the undercarriage. Just another possibility. Crawl under there and take a look around. Should be obvious.
