Unhappy 89 LXI Fan Problem

Hello and thanks for any ideas, I have an 89 accord lxi. The temp goes way up! mainly on hot days or when at idle. the cooling fans work but don't come on until after the car is turned off sometimes or when the ac is on. I have replaced the thermostat, temp sensor,Radiator, fan relays. Thanks

Re: 89 LXI Fan Problem

You and me and several others with Accords of that vintage, I've seen a lot of posts here dealing with bizzare fan behavior in like '86-'90's. it must be indicative of a common problem

Unfortuneately, I haven't solved mine yet. It is actually a friend's car ('88), and he has another car to drive, so I've been putting it off because it is trying my patience.

I'll tell you what I have found. In his case, the fan would not always run when needed, and would sometimes for no reason run after the car was shut off, not right away but sometimes hours after, and would run until the battery went dead.

I found a couple of wires coming off the underhood main power center near the battery that showed strong continuity to ground (constant battery load)with everything turned off, and one of these caused a very faint noise from the left headlight retractor motor when the path was completed by the test light.

This retractor had quit operating around the same time the trouble started. It's wiring also runs through the same loom as the wiring to the fan control temp sensor. I've split the loom going to the engine side of that harness, and found lots of wiring with badly cracked insulation, and some that show evidence of overheating (blistered insulator) .

So I'm sure I'm looking for a pair of wires from two unrelated sytyems that have fused together somewhere in the harness, but I haven't been able to talk myself into splitting the loom and seperating all that hard to access wiring yet.

I know this is not exactly like your problem, from your description, but I thought I'd toss it out there in case some part sounds familiar to you. Have you noticed any other electrics behaving oddly since the problem started?

thanks for the info. I haven't seen any other electronic problems other than when the fan would run after I turned off the car it would stop if I put the key in and turned forward one notch.

Re: 89 LXI Fan Problem

I think that's normal. I think the logic behind it is that when the water pump is circulating, then the fan doesn't (necessarily) need to be on. BUT, if you turn A/C on (with the ignition on), BOTH fans should run.

In any event, that doesn't solve your overheating problem. Did you bleed to cooling system? That's a must after changing hoses, thermostat or rad.
