Question Electric Problem (89 Civic Si - ED7)

Hi there! I have a problem with my Rear Wiper and 3rd Brake Light. For some reason the both of them refuse to work. The rear wiper motor is functional and connected properly, and the 3rd brake lamp is brand new, however, neither of them go.

I've inspected all my box fuses and they're fine. Also, the Rear Washer is fully functional, so it's safe to assume that it's motor isn't hooked up to the same circuit as the Rear Wiper & 3rd Brake Light.

I guess it'd be worth mentioning that they both ceased working when my car was broken into, the steering column being torn apart in the process. I would hope that my Honda guy would connect everything back up properly when fixing it, so it's probably a faulty fuse or relay that I don't know about. Needless to say, I don't wish to pay to identify the problem...

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Electric Problem (89 Civic Si - ED7)

check the wire that goes from the body of the car into the liftgate. both of those components are on the liftgate, so chances are you have crimped the wire by closing the liftgate on it. its got a rubber boot sealing it off, and under the boot is a plug. its a two wire plug on cars without a wiper, and im not sure how many wires on the one with a wiper, but its definitely more.

thats where i would check, since you said both of them dont work.

Thumbs up

Wow, thanks for the help guys! It turned out that the cause of the problem was in fact a couple of severed wires in the liftgate boot. Nice diagnosis. Only took about 1/2 hr to correct. The timing of the break-in was purely coincidental.

So for future study, there's 6 wires in that boot, of which the green/black & green/white ones definitely hook up to the 3rd Brake Light and Rear Wiper. It's a bit of a bitch to repair the wires without cutting into the boot, but it can be done.

Oh, and I also appreciate the wiring diagram, I'm sure that'll come in handy.

Thanks again, you just saved me a lot of money I'm sure.
