Problem with 3rd gear

I have a 1992 325i (manual) and the problem is I cannot select 3rd gear when driving. 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th are fine. But for some reason, I cannot select 3rd. Whenever I try, I get a grinding noise like I'm trying to select a gear without using the clutch.
Any suggestions on what that could be?

Thanks

Do you think that would be an expensive repair, or should I start looking for a new trans.
