Rearend swap question
This guy in my area is selling an 87iroc rearend, drum setup with posi and 3.42 gears. I was wondering if the i could throw the posi and gears into mine. I have the same rearend with 2.73 or 2.77 and open differential. Would just swapped the whole rearend all together put the other has some issues wrong with it, that don't involvle the gears and posi i assume. This is what he said "stock 87 IROC rear end 3.42 gears posi drum brakes with ebrake cables. Main caps have been off. Missing one of the brake lines that goes to the T-fitting near the pumpkin" i don't know what it means put i guess the posi and gears are still good. So can i just swap them in?

If he means what im thinking about by "main caps" its what i now as "bearing caps", they basically hold the differential in as it spins... what does he mean by theyre "been out"?? Otherwise... if you have a brake lien that will fit where the missing one is swap the whoel rear in, it is very doable in your driveway as opposed to swapping in gears which I would leave to a professional, and that costs money

Yeah, i have a brake line considering i can pretty much use the current one on the car, since mine and his are both 87 iroc, his a t-5 305tpi and mine 700r4 305tpi, so i should just put the whole rearend instead, less hassle i guess, plus i could do that with my pops in the garage. Can i get the bearing caps from a local store like autozone?

Hey, is bad if the caps are off? He swapped in a 4th gen 10 bolt, so i figured he took them off in the process of taking off the rearend. Am i on the right track? Replaceable bearings can be bought from autozone for a $10. I assume i can use the current brake cables and stuff to bolt up to the rearend since we have the same car, both 87's irocs.

so long as you both have 10 bolts, the swap is a no brainer. However, if he put in a fourth gen carrier, you will need a set of 89-92 axles to make it work. Your car has 26 spline axles, and the 89 and up camaros used 28 spline axles that were stronger. After you get the axles, youll need new bearings, and a rear differential install kit with shims and contact paint. Youll also need a micrometer to check backlash. Then comes the arduous task of installing the unit correctly down to the thousandth of an inch. Youll also need a hydrolic press to install/remove the pinion bearing for replacement. I suggest buying the rear carrier and gears, and paying the dealership to do the job right.

Or a reputable tranny shop, dealers will most likely be a lot more expensive.

Good, because his rearend is stock out of an 87 iroc, so i can just take mine out and bolt his in, right?
