Question Pulling 4.0 SOHC

I just purchased a 1998 Ford Explorer from a good friend that has 260,000 miles on it. It has the 4.0 SOHC, engine code "E". The timing chain jumped and now am left at a tuff decision. I feel it is time to pull the motor and have it rebuilt since it has so many miles on it, but beofre I got carried away I thought I would ask everyones opinion on pulling that motor out of the Explorer. Any tips or advice or any little tricks I should know or any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks

Re: Pulling 4.0 SOHC

Did you check with your Ford dealer first? My timing chains went, they were on recall, and fixed. They blew the repair and dropped in a new engine -- free of charge.

My moms got a 99 with 180,000. She wants me to replace hers now. Do you think the Dealer will cover it with that many miles on it?

Re: Pulling 4.0 SOHC

if a part is on recall they are required to replace it. You don't necessarilly have to rebuild the motor if the inner parts are in good condition, but it is always best to redoe all the seals, gaskets and the oil rings.

Re: Pulling 4.0 SOHC

Agreed. A recall is a recall; no parameters. Take a look at the NHTSA site. I think they have a list of recalls. Otherwise, Google it. That's how I found out about the timing chains.
