PTE scm50
What do you guys think about this turbo? I'm getting ready to buy it from a friend for 650 installed. Obviously I don't have the rest of the mods needed, but once I have dsmlink, fuel, and fmic I think this turbo would be sick. It's on its third owner which is kind of bad, I'll check the shaft play as soon as I can.
The previous owner, a dsm buddy of mine, ran 13.3 at 112 on street tires. Dyno'd it mad 347whp and 329wtq, on race gas, kinda low for this turbo. The trap easily good enough for 12's. I "race" mainly on the highway. It will be on a daily driver than gets like 100miles a day.

Re: PTE scm50
The older PTE turbos used a 270 degree thrust bearing which caused a lot of problems. I'm sure you've read about PTE turbos crapping out on people almost brand new. Recently PTE switched to a 360 degree thrust bearing which has reportedly cured the short life-span problem of their past turbos.
Since your turbo is on its 3rd owner, it obviously has the older 270 deg bearing and probably has quite a few miles on it. I wouldn't recommend buying it. You're better off buying a new turbo. Hell, slowboyracing has a sale on their t04e "50 trim" for $699 right now! These utilize the 360 degree thrust bearing too - http://www.slowboyracing.com/more.php?id=9&

Re: PTE scm50
Thanks for the info I'll look into that turbo and other 50 trims. I'll find out which bearing it has because that turbo doesn't have many miles on it. Both upgraded to a 60-trim or higher within a few weeks.

Re: PTE scm50
50 trims are plentiful, and $650 isn't that great of a deal. AGP, SBR, FP.. everyone offers a 50 trim. Make sure you are getting the hybrid 50 trim if you have a stock manifold.

Re: PTE scm50
Thanks for the info. After asking again, the turbo is about a year old, but has 0 shaft play. Should I still get it?
Jake? Kevin? Any more input is appreciated. Thanks

Well, the information I received about this was from a thread on dsmtuners and then backed up by a couple of very knowledgable local guys here (non-dsm). Regardless, I think I would pass on this deal. $650 on any used turbo of this size is a bad idea, IMO.

Re: PTE scm50
I paid $700 for my turbo, injectors, and wastegate. I have a 56 trim (FP 3065) which will outflow that turbo by almost 20lbs a min. $650 for it isnt that great of a deal. Look around some more, if he includes injectors or something else into the deal and helps you install it then it probably wouldnt be that bad. Just my
