VW Golf/GTI VR6

Hello,

First post in this specific forum. Anyways, I was looking at the the VW Golf/GTI VR6 and I have some questions. First of all, sometimes I've seen the car labeled as the Golf and sometimes labeled as the GTI VR6. If I'm correct the Golf is the stock model and the VR6 is like the Turbo model. Is this correct? If not, could someone please clarify this for me?

Secondly, if it is possible I would like to be able to get this car to run mid 13's to low 14's. How much would I probably have to spend to get it do this reliable? Also, is this car very reliable? One more thing, is it FWD or RWD?

Thank you.

Re: VW Golf/GTI VR6

Golf is a down tuned version, VR6 is kinda sportier, GTI I believe has a turbo 4 banger, and R32 is AWD with the VR6 motor, a little bit lighter, and handles better. I think its a high 14 second car, so it shouldn't be to hard to get them to be fairly quick. I'd recomend going with the turbo 1.8L model, as very little can make those things move. I drove my...I guess hes a cousin...Audi A4 with the 1.8T, had the Nuespeed Chip, Exhaust, Intake, and I think a short throw (something to do with the tranny overall), and that thing moved pretty quick.

Sorry. I would have posted it in the VW forum but there was a Golf and a GTI forum and I didn't know which to put it under. I'm truly sorry.

Anyways, I may as well ask this as I've been thinking about it for a while. I'm looking for a very novice friendly car (Probably is going to be FWD but that's fine with me), with good gas mileage (20+ up, 25+ would be ideal), can run 13's-14's reliably, isn't super expensive ($5K would be ideal), and that can be upgraded to run 13's-14's reliably with out to much money ($1-3K would be ideal). Does anything jump to mind? I don't really want an Eclipse or DSM because all of my friends have them and I really like to be different and stand out. So, anything that really jumps to mind?

Sorry for kind of changing the topic, if I should start a new one please tell me. Thank you.

Re: VW Golf/GTI VR6

if you like VW's and want something sporty, look into a vr6 corrado. i'm not a big VW fan by any means but i do love the corrado.

and FYI: GTI's are not always turbo, my friend had a NA one, i don't know what the dif is between a golf and a GTI but as far as i know, it's not the motor. i do know that the golf is the lower model and can be had with a TDI motor. also the R32 is pretty much the new VR6. it's a 3.2L where the old ones are 2.8's. i saw an r32 at the track recently running low 15's.

Re: VW Golf/GTI VR6

The only golfs they make now are the one with the 1.8 liter turbo and the one with the narrow-angle V6(VR6)...stock for stock, the VR6 is a bit quicker...but remember, play with those 1.8 turbos a little bit, and you can get awesome power gains...gotta love factory boost.

Thanks guys. So, would you recommend one for what I want? Also, it seems that the VR6's and R32's are pretty expensive so do you think a Golf could be made into what I want? If not, what other cars do you recommend?

Thank you.

Re: VW Golf/GTI VR6

Depends on how much your willing to spend. If I was forced to pick, I'd go with the new GTI with the 2.0L turbo, or a used 1.8T. However, if you have the money, you can get some decently quick cars used. How much are you looking to spend?

Re: VW Golf/GTI VR6

I know this sounds pathetic but I'm really cheap plus my cash flow isn't the strongest ever. I was hoping to spend $5K on the car itself and then possibly $2-3 more on upgrades.

Please keep in mind that I would like it to be reliable, good gas milage (Daily driver), and novice friendly. Also, if possible I would like it to be a little different (Not your standard DSM or Civic).

Re: VW Golf/GTI VR6

Eeek...cant help here, I was thinking that if you were looking into V dubs, you would be somewhere in the mid range, like 15ish...
