Not in VA.

§ 46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.

No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

Here, any exhaust that isn't stock, is considered illegal.

if the exhaust is in the same spot on the car as the stock was its comparable, thats why aftermarket exhausts use the same mounting spots as the stock, so its still "comparable"... it doesnt have to be stock, it just cant be totally different

Come get an exhaust ticket in VA, go to court to try and fight it, use that same explanation you just said, and then still end up paying the same fines as before and now court fees. It's been tried many times. If a cop here doesn't like your exhaust, you get pulled and get a ticket, and you won't get out of it unless you put the stocker back on. My exhaust is in the exact same place as it was from the factory, it's not loud AT ALL, yet I've had 3 tickets for it. It's not even worth going to court for the tickets to get them dropped because the court fees cost more then the damn ticket itself. $35 fine for the exhaust, or $60 for court fees. The commonwealth here runs on traffic tickets. People just pay them and be done with it. If everybody here stopped driving, this city would collapse under it's own power.

Dude you're not form California... you have no idea!

eBay intakes sure as hell aren't CARB legal last time I checked. If you want CARB legal, try K&N, Injen, AEM, or Jim Wolf. There might be more, but you should check it out for yourself. http://arb.ca.gov

You guys in Virginia, if your stock exhaust rusts out, what do you replace it with? Assuming another stocker is not available, unless you want to try your luck at the dealership...

I haven't seen any CARB legal exhausts for CA, but I know for a fact that it only has to be under 95db, and it will be legal. APEX'i has a CHP bulletin regarding this issue. Just remembered, Greddy might have a CARB legal exhaust. Make sure you get something that is cat-back, then you won't have to worry about failing emissions. It's the noise that's the problem.

The law is there to allow reasonable alternatives. If it's got a muffler, you usually should be alright. Stillen and NISMO make aftermarket exhausts for the 350z and are often dealer installed... don't tell me you guys don't have those in Virginia...
