strong gasoline smell

My 84 El Camino stock 305 4bbl Quadrajet, automatic transmission, has a very strong gasoline smell after it has been driven then turned off. I cannot see any leaks, but it seems to be coming from the carburetor area. Anybody know how to fix this?

I had the same problem for a long time until someone suggested it was the fuel pump....yup it was.

Look for a leak at the fuel inlet at the carb first. Also q-jets have soft plugs at the bottom of the fuel bowls, they are notorious for leaking and dumping gas into the manifold. Check your throttle linkage and return spring for a bind, make sure it fully closes when the engine is off.

Also, check the short rubber gas line that runs from the metal fuel line to the fuel pump for cracks or deterioration.
