Just read the economy thread, and you guys do do things differently your side of the pond. We get much higher octane, dont know if its rated differently, but we have

Premium = 95 octane
Super = 97 octane
Shell optimax = 98 octane (min)

I run mine on Optimax, and it does run smoother than on Premium, and the torque seems better mid range, pulls better anyway. Its a blended fuel, and has de carbon addatives, lubricants and other stuff in it, loads better than premium, and cheaper than Super, and i get 1-2mpg more, so it works out the same as premium

But dont complain about you prices, as it costs a little more over here, in fact it costs me over $50 (£33) to fill a 10 gallon tank!!!

Means i spend at least $300 a month on fuel, usually around $350, most of thats tax too!!

but to answer the question, the octane does stuff for your car mainly it stops pinking etc, and reduces emmisions. Is it worth it??? well thats up to you, i think it is on mine

yeah ultra 94, bit of a contradiction when the Japs have 100 octane

have a look at

http://www.total.co.za/External_cont...rol_octane.htm

good description of octane ratings and the benefits

As most honda engines are high compression you do get a benefit at high running temps. Dont know which ones have knock sensors, dont think my d16Z6 does, but it will help prevent timing retardation. But if you permanently run on high octane then you can advance the timing quite a bit. A guy over here has a B16 running 18° advance, and got a couple of BHP and better response so the benefits can be maximised. I am getting it done this service with me cam belt change, along with other things as i dont have a timing gun.

TVR's have a switch on the dash which you can flick for 95/97 octane, which changes the timing, which is pretty sweet
