What is the best way to check the fluid level in a 5 speed transmission, 1991 model?

Joe:

You have to remove the speedometer cable from the top of trans. Fluid should be almost to top when you look inside.

E means you have to remove speed sensor from top of trans. to do this one normally removes the cable from the sensor. when you take the sensor out the fluid does not come to the top of the transmission. it should come high enough that the sensor gear is partially submerged.

i check by pulling the sensor, flick my wrist to throw the fluid off the gear, pop it back in, and pull it out again. if there's fluid on the gear again, then its somewhere between the refill and fill marks, and you're good to go.
