95 Escort revving like mad

This has been really strange.....somedays (most actually) my engine will rev up throughout my whole drive, even when I am not pressing the gas is revs up and stays at the same speed for 20 minutes at a time without me touching the gas once....also whenever that happens, my brakes are REALLY hard to work, i have to press as hard as I can to keep it from flying off, restarting to car doesnt seem to help any either....any ideas?

Re: 95 Escort revving like mad

Could be a sticky throttle or there might be something wrong with the throttle body itself.

Iac

It is your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It is a small cylinder about the size of a couple D cell batteries that sits on top of your throttle body. It is a pretty inexpensive part at any parts store.
Sounds like your car is an automatic... until you get it fixed you can shift into neutral when stopping so the engine does not keep pushing you. This might cause a little jolt when you put it back in drive.
When this happened on my car it died while I was going down the highway and didn't even know it... I came up to a red light at the exit and the motor kept racing as if I was still doing 60. Luckily mine is a manual so I just had to push the clutch.
Anyway... IAC valve. Start there.
