00 Sunfire OEM/Wires & Color Codes Help
I've begun the install on this yesterday but couldn't finish in time. Now my girlfriend is pissed. I'm off today so I've been trying to finish it, however I cannot find an OEM wiring diagram for the color coding of the factory wires so I can match them up with my JVC CD player.
We just purchased a JVC KD-S31 MP3/CD/WMA player and the faceplate kit to fit for it. That's all put together and ready, wires on both the new harness and the factory harness are twisted up(I cut the plug off the factory and I'ma wire it to the new cd player's wiring harness which lists everything making that at least east) waitin to be taped, the electrical tape's sittin in the seat, but I'm not messin with that til someone can put me onto some type of help. This morning, the whole instrument panel lit up, AB/Air bags/check eng./etc . Though I just left the wires comin out the console, I'd imagine the ground hit another wire cause the inside dome lights/acc. lights don't work currently anymore since I yanked the factory radio out. But this is what I need, can someone put me onto the OEM color codes or a stereo wiring diagram for the '00 Sunfire? There's a site that everyone refers to but I can't recall the address off the top, but those colors don't match up to the wires IN our Sunfire. I know its smarter to go out and buy a harness that plugs in and eliminate the gruff, but its one of those check-to-check months and I've finally gotten the chance to get the faceplate kit for the stereo and I've decided to put it in now while I got a chance. I'm going out in a sec to write down the factory colors I HAVE on the wires, then run down the JVC's coding. InstallDR and 12volt's charts don't match up as I've written them down, went out to finish the install and got stumped as the colors do not match up. Hope to hear from some of you guys. I'm gonna check back frequently so I'll be able to answer any of your questions. |

Re: 00 Sunfire OEM/Wires & Color Codes Help
ummm I dont think you can remove the factory stereo on that year car...nothing will work due to the anti-theft system running through the stereo. you probably shouldn't have cut the wire harness off. from what I've heard, there's a special harness you get to move the stock stereo to the trunk, then hook your stereo in at the dash. Not sure if the harness thing is true or not, but pretty sure on the keeping the stock stereo hooked up thing.

Alright well, as is, the Theftlock system on it hasn't went haywire or anything. The console is open where the factory stereo was AT, I've already spliced up the wires, got em ready to wire in the JVC. More or less, the plastic console is off, the factory st. is out, the plug is cut and the wires hangin out the console.
However, the issue is with the factory plug/putting a unit in the trunk so as the TLS doesn't freak out. WHERE in the trunk is there a plug to put the unit AT in there? I'm guessing I can go buy another plug for the factory stereo which I cut off to splice the wires/new stereo in, re-attach it to the factory, put IT in the trunk and the JVC in the console. I'm not exactly believing or buying this stuff about you having to leave the factory radio where its at, and plug the unit you want into the trunk. That doesn't really make sense at all, meaning, unless you had a CD changer deck mounted back there and usable by remote, you're pretty much unable to HAVE a single disc CD player, cause you're not gonna fold the back seat down or stop and pop the trunk and change discs to switch CD's everytime you want. That makes no type of sense at all. Does anyone have those OEM color codes so I can figure out whats what for this? |

Re: 00 Sunfire OEM/Wires & Color Codes Help
From what I understand (after searching the Org for the info), if you remove the stock stereo, you will lose your onstar, and vehicle warning chimes. the solution is to mount the stock unit in the rear (trunk) and use a t-harness to retain the two affected items. there is also a module you can get to replace the chimes/onstar, but it's cheaper to just move the stock deck i believe. check at best buy/circuit city for the harness.

I have a 2000 Sunfire, and it has a non-stock CD player in it and it works just fine. No problems with any theft system, you just don't have your door/light chimes (which I always found annoying anyway, so I'm sorta glad to not have them.)

Re: 00 Sunfire OEM/Wires & Color Codes Help
I just did this install with the aftermarket harness that puts the factory stereo in the trunk. It's easy to do and there is no question what WON'T be affected in the system of the car.Do the job right the first time and you will be safe later down the road.

Re: 00 Sunfire OEM/Wires & Color Codes Help
I have also replaced my factory radio with an aftermarket system and all is fine,(yet i do not have onstar), just lost my warning chimes. There is a module, like hotbug said, part # GMRC-01 and can be purchased for 70 - 100 dollars depending where it is coming from. This is a class II data bus interface with a built in speaker which replaces door chimes and components lost by removing the factory radio. This is a small unit that can be mounted under the dash which will save from having to run another harness from front to back and also having to hide that big old stock radio in the trunk. Dollar wise might be the same because the harness to go back to the trunk will have to be a fair length and i have seen harnesses shorter than that go for more.
