flash popups on this site. off topic

the forum got a lil trickiy and started useing flash popups which are tough to avoid, even with firefox. but with the new extensions (addblock and popups must die) from firefox extensions page these tough popups are killed! i can deal with the embedded ads but the popups really torque me why would this site force them on you. anyway just told ya how to get rid of them.

I don't have to do anything special to prevent them.... This has been brought up a few times before in the other forums. It seems that most of the people experiencing pop-ups haven't downloaded the windows update service pack 2. Just go to the windows update site and make sure you have all the current updates:

No problems here with ad's ever. Use IE 6 at home with fully updated windows & Norton Internet Security suite.
Firefox at work with no problems either.

Re: flash popups on this site. off topic

I spend a lot of time on here and still haven't seen any pop-ups...you may have some adware or spyware. The cleaners I use are pretty effective, it's always better to use more than one because each one finds things that the other misses. I use the following:

Lavasoft AdAware
SpyBot S&D
SpywareBlaster

**EDIT** I forgot to mention that they are all free downloads.

Clearing cookies and temp files may also help.

Re: flash popups on this site. off topic

i use adaware, then spybot s&d and that has taken care of everything to this point, and once n a while i run antivir, none of them are picken up aurora, so i manually searched one night for several hours with no luck, got some other "crap" off of here, but every time i make a move it pops up, im going to whipe the net from here and reset it all tonight b4 grad, then hopefully when i bring myselfe back on its gone, im hoping its in ie or firefox, if not, its going to get a reformation... pain in my ass computer lol

If that doesn't do it....you can try a complete system clean, it would be better than having to reformat.

I block all ad directories here with firefox (using the ad-block plug in) Definatly works well. Another good plug in is Flash Block... Turns all flash ads in to a button

yes rlith that is exactly what i am useing, except i also have a extension called popups must die with firefox. that is the only thing that would kill the flash popups for me. also to the other poster i have scanned system with 3 or 4 dif. spysweepers and found nothing new. seems webroots spysweeper is doing its job.

has anyone else noticed the embedded ad links on certain keywords or is it just me.. seems they just started using this a day or so ago, at least i have never noticed them before. howard forums started using them also just recently. these do not bother me at all but i must say the popups is what bothers me the most. but the popups are under controll for now until there is another way to force them on us.

Are you talking about the google "relevent text ads"? They have always been here. I have a Gmail account and they have the targeted ads there, too.

BTW I have 50 invitations to give out if anybody wants Gmail. Right now, it is an invitation only email service. I wouldn't use the account for any sensitive info, though...google has a questionable privacy policy.
