Another resin question:
I know some of you folks are pretty schooled in the ways of resin casting, and I've tried it and done it with good success. So far I've been using the Micromark set to get started, but I think it's time to move on. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what is a better resin for casting in? The rubber they use for molds seems good enough, but the resin is weird; it stays soft in the middle for large volume parts for quite some time, and it sticks to some plastics (namely the little cups I store them in) and that damages the parts. I know some of these issues are because I suck at mixing, but I wouldn't mind using a harder resin like the kind the pros use, this white stuff ain't cuttin the mustard. Anyone got any advice? Maybe not the really fancy nice (ie, expensive stuff), but a step up.

Re: Another resin question:
I've only had limited experience with Alumilite, but so far it's been pretty good. It is cured in minutes and not horribly expensive that I can tell.

Re: Another resin question:
The MM stuff comes from Smooth-On. The resin is, I believe, the SO 300. You can't get much better than the SO300. The RTV is "Oomoo 40", which is something even SO doesn't recommend but it's cheap and good for making parts in a hurry. I didn't have the problems you describe when using the 300 white, perhaps your ratios and mixing are a little off. Resin is also an adhesive, so if your parts aren't dried all the way I can see how they'd stick to your storage cups.
The SO321 is the off-white/tan stuff, but I haven't found much of a difference between it and the 300 except that it's slightly cheaper. Don't confuse the 321 with the old slimy tan resin that you find in earlier resin kits. I'm not sure of the story behind those but I haven't seen parts made from those in a while except at a swap meet vendor selling all kinds of old resin stuff.

Re: Another resin question:
I use an RTV silicone material to make my molds. Then I use Alumilite to cast the new parts.
www.jgreer.com takes like 16 hours to cure www.alumilite.com only 5-10 minutes to cure |
