expensive Transmission noises!!!!

while driving home tonight my 98 blazer (auto-trans) started screaming at me that i'm about to be more broke that i already am. I heard a little "pop" followed by a LOUD whirring noise that intensifies with car speed or maybe engine speed i'm not really sure. i lost most of the drive in forward gears though i was able to limp it home as i was just around the block. when it's in neutral there's no noise even when reving the engine. in forward gears it stops making the whirring noise when i'm at a stop. but in reverse it starts making the noise at all times stoped or not and i have NO drive in reverse. Tourque Converter??? i know little about transmissions and nothing about automatic transmissions. what does it sound like to you guys???

Thanks
Jason

Probably the sunshell blew apart... Known to be fairly common in these trannies.

Re: expensive Transmission noises!!!!

If you lost reverse, second and fourth gears then it is the reaction sunshell. It requires a rebuild or replacement of the tranny. Continuing to drive it will cause further damage.

Yeah, it's "Smiling Bob". I thought he would make an amusing avatar. That makes me chuckle everytime I see it.

I agree with you all it definitely sounds like the sun shell reaction assy. Mine blew 67K ago and at 100K the tech said that they let loose due to metal fatigue.

This can be percipitated by the continual rolling backward and dropping into Drive several times.

So once you chip-in $1500 over-haul you learn...now I put it in reverse, back out, come to a complete stop, then put it in park and go.....

The good news is, it gives someone a chance to look at the whole tranny since they have to disassemble the whole damn thing and look for other problems.....

But when my broke, I drove it right to the dealer in third gear.....you DON'T want to keep driving it or you will be trashing the whole thing and cost you way more....I was luck that was the only problem I had...but drove it 23 miles to the shop....with the motor at 2500 RPM's on the freeway.....
