90 manual shift

of course had to happen in middle of a long trip. i can shift 1-4 fine but 5 or reverse the stick twists and doesn't go past 3/4. taking it apart so don't know if i can fix it or if i need to go to junk yard and get an other shift mechanism. according to haynes the shift stick assembly unbolts of tranny so going by that. curious if normal problem and if so usual fix. thanx

haynes only says how to remove and replace the shifter unit. i spent a day at 3 differant junkyards and all the simuliar shifter units were broken too. i went to my dealer and for $15 ordered the seat and bushing (my seat was broken but as long as i had it out replaced the bushing) the mechanic showed me how to disemble the unit. on top is what looks like an o inside an o with the stick coming out. the inside o pushes in and turned counter clockwise pops out. the stick can be removed now. looking inside you can see the plastic seat. pop that out and pop in a new one. reinstall the stick the way it came out and reinstall the inner o. pop off the bushing on the end of stick and pop on the new one. now i have a rebuilt shift assembly and just bolt it back in. shift beautifully.
