96 Ram Transmission Problems
I have a 96 Ram 1500 with transmission problems. The computer gives the code P1756 Manufacturer Contol. Transmission. The Haynes manual I have does not cover the P1 codes at all so i am at a loss. Anyone know exactly what this code is for. BTW the truck acts like it won't go into 1st and 2nd while selector is in Drive. I can get 1st and 2nd with the shifter. The truck seems to be hung in 3rd while in Drive. Maybe this is a safe mode but I'm not sure. I am going to change the fluid and filter first. Thanks.

Code p1756 is GOV Press Not Equal to Target, The requested pressure and the actual pressure are within a tolerance band for the Governor Control System. This is used to regulate gov pressure to control shifting to 1st 2nd and 3rd gear which is pretty much exactly what you explained when you are in drive. its also commonly referred to as a Mid Pressure Malfunction. Hope that helps...

Re: 96 Ram Transmission Problems
Thanks HansonHVAC. I had to go out of town a couple of days so I'm going to try to get back on this problem this weekend.

Re: 96 Ram Transmission Problems
If you replace the gov sol. replace the transducer also. usally if the gov or transducer is bad it will hunt for a gear under light trottle at about 10-15mph. by hunt i mean shift between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 1 st and so on.

Sorry it took me so long to get back on this. Thanks for the help. So far I have changed the fluid and filter and got no joy. However, during the meantime I had occaision to borrow my Ram battery for the tractor and when I replaced the battery the codes were gone. So far they haven't returned. I can still get reverse with no problems. I can get 1st 2nd and 3rd and overdrive with the gear selector but when I put it in drive it acts like the clutch( or in this case the TC ) is slipping. If I goto drive straight out of low then it also slips. The vehicle will go but its like you are riding the clutch, if it had one. Once the truck gets going it runs like nothing is wrong. Also, I noticed today that after driving the truck for a few miles and checking the dipstick it did not even register fluid on the dipstick. I had the truck running in neutral as per the owner's manual when I checked it. Maybe I need to change the fluid again or flush the tranny? I do not know. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
