It's a real bit@#. When that nut tightens down, the tie rod's tapered edge really gets stuck in the steering knuckle. Spray some PB blaster in there, maybe heat it up a bit. Just keep banging on it, maybe a bigger hammer too. Don't damage the threads if you're planning on re-using the tie rod end tho.

Re: geo metro steering knuckle removle..
Ok, quick and easy
Take wheel/ tire off, remove caliper and pads if so desired. Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end nut, and loosen the nut using a 17mm wrench or socket. Don't remove the nut from the tie rod end completely yet. Take a bottle jack, or scissor jack, or whatever you have, and set it under the nut. Lower the car onto the jack until a good part of its weight is supported by the jack, then give the steering knuckle a couple sharp smacks with a hammer, right on the end where the tie rod end goes through. this will pop the tie rod end loose. then remove the jack, finish spinning the nut off, and remove the tie rod from the knuckle. Be careful not to hit the tie rod end though, you will pretty much destroy it if you do. Happy Whacking |

Re: geo metro steering knuckle removle..
I have 1996 Geo Metro and I resently replaced both the left and right front wheel bearings. I had to remove both steering knuckles and I used a ball joint/tie rod fork to seperate the tie rod from the knuckle. it did take some time but it did pop loose with the fork.
