88 Beretta Engine Swap - Go big or go home

I am the proud owner of an 88 Beretta. It has a 2.8L 5 Speed in it. The tranny is not in very good condition, and the motor has 200 000 kilometers, i dont know what that is in miles. So i want to put a larger engine into it. I want to go newer, since a newer engine has less miles on it, but I have no way of finding out how new I can go before the motor mounts are in the wrong place, the tranny doesnt line up, electronics dont work ect... I would like to know if anyone has the knowledge on this particular question. I am hoping to put a 3.1L (or bigger if i can). Thanks!

Danny.

3.1 will go, don't know if the tranny will mount up, but if yours is going you'll probably need to replace it anyway. But it should mount up fine with the existing motor mounts.
