Turbo has taken a turn for the worst....

well i was really liking my 14b that jake gave me with little miles on it , untill today when i heard a funny sound. it sounded like a dremmel tool cutting into plastic at very very high RPM...so when i got home i went to check the turbo to see if that was the problem. well it was the problem allright...a large amount of shaftplay, not alittle alot. enough to where the compressor started grinding down the compressor housing.....
here are some pics:
in the first one you can see a fine dust on the compressor that dust was once part of the compressor housing....

in this blurry second one you can see the marks in the comprsessor housing....

now my question to you is , is it ok to drive like this for a while untill i get it fixed? i really need this car for work and school.... my second question is :what causes shaft play and how can i prevent it?

thanks,
Jake Jeske

Im assuming you theoretically could be you risk getting any extra pieces being scraped off sucked into your engine, and if you are planning for a rebuild driving it more will most likely just diminish your chances of having a turbo that can be fixed. Personally I would call it quits until you either get a new one or a rebuild kit in, just my 2 cents

i wouldn't drive it or even run the car until you get it fixed or get a different one. you could chip off a blade or two and send them flying inside the motor and then you'd really have a problem on your hands.

Yea, def wait until you get it fixed, a rebuild isnt good because you have to take it to a mechanic to get it balanced(ends up costing the cost of another 14b turbo). Ill be taking out my T-25 on thursday, sell it to you cheap, about 84k miles, Ill get pics of it ASAP

Re: Turbo has taken a turn for the worst....

Cant just rebuild it now, even if it was cost effective, since the housing is shot. Better to just find another one.

I've got two 1g BOVs that came off my car and my brothers. We both got Turbo X's BOV's in the same month. They're uncrushed, and held up 16 lbs of boost in my car with no leaks. Should hold more. If interested let me know.

unfortunately he just had a full rebuild....

I'd say NO to driving it at all just for the fact that it WAS just rebuilt...
