timing belt 92 passat, 9A engine

need to know. changing timing belt on 92 Passat GL, got the timing marks on camshaft, the the crankshaft set. the distributor # 1 mark
off a little, can get with adjusting. how to tell if valve are damaged? can pull valve cover, but to lazy.

Are you on the exhaust stroke or intake stroke??? Is there lots of smoke? Pollutions and terrible (load of hot wheels in a cement truck) Noises are always a dead giveaway to signs of valve bendage.Does it run...etc...etc.
