Thumbs down 1995 4X4 Explorer Front End Whistling Noise

Bought new in '95 and just started to hear a whistling noise at 73,000 mi. somewhere in front of the vehicle. It comes and goes with speed, but is most noticeable around 40 MPH and up. It sounds like air rushing through an opening. I do not believe it is an air leak around any of the windows, because it is much louder with the windows open. The weird noises coming from this vehicle are driving me crazy. I did a search, but no close match. I thought it might be a wheel bearing, but the Ford Dealer says not. They can not figure it out. Thanks

Re: 1995 4X4 Explorer Front End Whistling Noise

Just a thought: check the inside of the wheel well on which ever side it is whistling... there are a few folks i remember over in the kia sportage or sedona forum that have had whistling problems and that has been what they discovered... Good luck!

After hours of investigation, I have found the source of my whistling noise in the front of my 95 sport. When the vehicle was new my dealer installed a Ford labeled bug shield/wind deflector. This deflector has 4 small slits on the underside close to the screws that hold it in place. These slits are approximately 4.5" long and 1/4" wide. The air rushes up through the openings making the irritating noise. I taped them over with duct tape and have plans to permanently close them with silicon sealer. If you wanted to make your deflector whistle, the slits are the perfect solution. Maybe they doubled as deer alert whistles.
