95 avenger i-4

Ok i have a 95 avenger with the i-4 2.0 dohc and its constantly blowing out blue and grey smoke out of the tail pipe what are all the possibilities? i know of some but can anyone tell me what else it could be please be specific its been a really good car so far dont wanna give up on it now thatnks for taking the time ~mr.avenger~

im not exactly sure i have no tools to check anything thats the thing i was thinking oil becuz blue smoke usually means oil but its blueish grey thats the thing the guy i got it from said he changed all the seals and gaskets im just wondering if he messed them up but is that what it could be how could i check to see if its air fuel mixture or oil? or whatelse it could be?

well that engine is notorious for blowing head gaskets...

If that were the problem then he would most likely be getting white smoke, which is the engine burning coolant. Blue smoke means you're burning oil. Black smoke usually means you're running rich.

However, I assure you that you're burning oil. I don't really know why it is blueish gray, but you're burning oil. Also, as Stang said, you could also be running rich. Take it to the dealer, they can check for sure.

Just curious, has your check engine light come on?

do yourself a huge favor and dump the car before you're in the same boat as I am in..
mine started the same way and now no one knows what the hell is wrong with it.

had other people look at the smoke and it is white and no the check engine light hasnt come on but there is a light on its orangeish and it shows like a flufid level or something im not sure what it is i have no manual for the car so i dunno what it means its on the right side, today i notuiced the car running hot with no fan coming on so i changed the thermostat and for sure they came on but its still blowuing white smoke like really bad...

well that does sound like a head gasket, which those engines are known for. that is probably the coolant light, so put some more coolant in it so it doesnt overheat, and change your headgasket.

Ok well i took it in today and the ppl told me that it had a lot of problems that they think it is the valve seats valve guides and most likely the head gaskets. So im sh** outta luck if anyone knows of any place or has seen anything online about the 2.0 l dohc ouuta an avenger lemme know i really like the car and want to keep it. it hugs the road like nothing ive drove before and it has really nice interior and its my very first car that ive actually owned, it does suck when it comes to turnign radius but other then that i love it, if you know of anything please be sure to hit me up about it thanks alot...

Hello all. Board noob here.. Name's Evvy (like Eddie).
I frequently buy used cars at dealer auctions through my dad's license. I recently picked up a 97 Avenger 2.0 with problems which is why I've registered here.
Anycrap, one of the first things I check in a used car that I'm interested in is the headgasket. This isn't very technical, but a good way to tell if it's blown for sure.
1. At start up, have someone (or yourself) watch the tailpipe for water dripping or spitting out. Rev the engine a bit. A little water dripping could be condensation, which is normal in some engines but should subside quickly. Consistant dripping/spitting is a good sign of blown headgasket. And yes, when the engine/exhaust is hot enough, the water will boil and come out as white vapor (steam) and will smell of antifreeze.
2. Turn off engine and remove oil filler cap. Look at underside of cap. Keep an eye out for a milky look to the oil on it. Threads of whiteish/milky color is another sign of bad headgasket.
3. Pull dipstick and look for same milkyness. Wipe oil off with your fingers and note color. It should be a clear-honey color. Dark or black means it needs a change, but again looking for milky threads. Check the oil on your fingers for a smell of antifreeze.

The oil may also smell like gasoline, giving an indication of worn piston rings allowing fuel into the crank-case and vice versa (oil getting into the cylinder, creating the bluish smoke from the exhaust.) Which I think is one of my current problems...

I'm not a mechanic, but pretty much grew up on my dads used car lot and have picked up these little tips along the way.
