Mystery Module

I had my air cleaner/MAF sensor housing out today.

I noticed a module behind the air cleaner against the front of the "cover" for the strut tower.

Does anyone know what this is for? I opened it up and all it contains are two relays. There was no mention of it in my Haynes and I though it might be my daytime running lights controller since this is a Canadian only item but I my DRL worked with both relays removed so it isn't that.

Re: Mystery Module

This is a holdover from earlier Windstars ... those are the relays controlling radiator fan speed.

Re: Mystery Module

Do the electric fans on the Windstars have the potential to run after the ignition has been shut off? I know this is common for autos with electric fans but I read somewhere that the fans are controlled by the PCM and I always thought the PCM was shut off with the ignition (with the exception of memory).

On the topic of the fans. Does anyone know why electric fans on many (if not all) autos equipped with them allow them to run after the engine has been shut off? I am comparing them with the belt drive versions that obviously never run after the engine is shut off. My thinking though is that once the engine is shut off the coolant stops flowing and the coolant near the cylinders now has to absorb more heat as the engine cools. Of course the engine is not producing any more heat. The running fans cool the coolant in the radiator but this will not get circulated at this time and the coolant in the radiator would cool relatively quickly in any event because of the fins (The fan obviously speeds this up).

In summary the running fans after the engine has been shut off cool the coolant in the radiator more quickly but what is the point of this?

Re: Mystery Module

DRW,

My 95, 3.8L has never run the fan after it's been shut down. I am positive of this because I always pause to stare at the beast, every time I step out, and shut the door. (golly why do they keep the interior lights on after the doors are shut?)

Don't know about the '95, but the '99 interior lamp light level switch has 2 "off" detents ... the lower one shuts off this delay feature (as well as the interior lights).

BTW, what sort of place is Grayson Stadium? I see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson are in concert there this Saturday.
