86 clutch adjustment

ive got and 86 gt and i just put a replacement clutch in it, that guy who had it before me put in some racey clutch on a stock motor, and i didnt want to drive it around with a clutch like that...anyway.

After i pu the new clutch in, its way out adjustment. i checked the aynes manual and it says its a self adjusting clutch, but obvuoisly something isnt working right. no matter how far the pedal goes down the clutch wont ever come out.

if anyone knows how those self adjusting thingys work, or what might be wrong, please tell me, cause i really dont want to drop the tranny or start tearing the steering column out to figure out what wrong.

sounds like somthings wrong, even a self adjusting clutch wont adjust itself that much, normally i think you pull out on the pedal, check your cable and quadrant

Do you have an adjustable cable? Do you still have the stock quadrant? Stock quadrants are self adjustable, but only to take up for cable stretch and such. This is done by sticking you toe under the clutch pedal and lifting it up, then pressing down on the pedal. Also check that the cable is fully on the quadrant?

did some major work today, decided to drop the tranny and see if its a problem with the clutch or with the cable and the quadrant

to answer your question yes everything is still stock and hooked up correctly, at least i think so. the manual was quite vague, so i hooked everything up the the way it was before, and it worked then.

so i found out that my clutch is fine, and the quadrant/adjuster etc is working fine, but with the tranny out i could see that the clutch fork and release bearing only move about 1/4 inch, the book says they sould move approx 3/4 an inch.

so ive determined what the problem is, but not how to fix it. any takers? im not beyond buying an aftermarket cable and quadrant set up if anyone thinks the problem will require new parts, might as well buy it while im replacing...

I would get those other parts no matter what. Adjustable cable, quadrant and firewall adjuster, it just makes things easier and operate smoother.

As far as the fork only moving so far, is the fork bent, what T/O bearing are you using. Inspect the stud that the fork slides into, also make sure its well greased with white lithium grease.
