Re: bug wont start

Check and make sure it's getting spark, take a sparkplug wire off the distributor cap and hold it next to the case and get someone to crank the motor over and see if you get an arc. DON'T DO THIS IF GAS IS PRESENT! (Learn from my mistake!) Did you take the wires off the distributor? If you did they may be on wrong. Messing with the carb opens up a whole nuther can-o-worms. Is the carb getting gas? Look down the carb throat and work the arm (ignition off!) and see if the accelerator pump is squirting gas down the throat. Make sure there are no open tubes on the carb, several carbs were used on several different models and may have small tubes, vacuum ports, etc. that need hoses or need to be plugged. There is a hose from the silver "bicuit" on the distributor to the carb that needs to be present. I've had several carbs that had additional ports that needed to be plugged (don't know what they were for). Basically check for spark and gas, if you've got both, then go with tuning the carb. Also make sure the solenoid on the side of the carb is wired and working, turn the ignition on and disconnect the wire, then touch it back and see if it makes a clicking sound. To tune I've always turned the screws in snug (not too tight) and turned them out a little at a time, one at a time till it starts. I'll look for a site that deals with adjusting the carb and get back with that info.

Go to vwhelp.com and click on carburetors, the info is there, and also some about timing, which I forgot. Good luck!
