transmission question out of the norm

ok i know that the hp limit for the subaru awd trans has been talked about before and i am not here to drag that subject down this road again.

i have heard of some people converting awd transmissions to rwd but has anyone evet tried to go from awd to fwd. i know it seems odd but i have been doing a lot of thinking about doing a kit car or a coustom build on a fiero frame. so far the best options for transmissions are porsche or audi, the porsche is an expensive option and the audi doesent handle to much power comparibaly, and i was thinking subaru, might handle power better if its only fwd and it comes in a 6 speed version. from the picture i found it looks like i can convert it without to much trouble.

any thoughts on an off the wall subject?

Re: transmission question out of the norm

Porsche make a mid-engined for a rwd setup, why not stay with that rather than butchering a poor innocent STI EJ25T?

well for a few reasions, when you are doing a kit car you want mid- engine RWD most porsche's are rear-engine RWD, this means you need to compleatly dismantel the engine and flip the differential over so you can put the engine in frount of the trans. the only good porsche transmission is the G50 and goon luck getting a hold of one not to meantion if you do find one they are expensive, i have seen them start on e-bay for $3500 and go up from there. and last but not least have you seen the size of those things they're huge i mean look at that you can see the transmission in the back of that lambo... yuck

Rear engine means the engine is behind the rear axle.
Mid engine means it is in front of the rear axle.
I know plenty of Prosche models which use a mid engine configuration.

You can just use a transmission from a FWD Impreza

no, but using a 5 speed FWD tranny would be a really cheap and easy solution

I've thought much about this when wondering what to do with my old motor after I swap :P

But why FWD? It just doesn't make sense to me...

We're talking about putting the engine in the back of the car. The FWD tranny is designed for a front engined Impreza, so it drives the axle more or less right under the engine. Put the engine in the back of the car and that'd be RWD.

So we're using the FWD tranny to make a mid engine RWD car.
