Server Upgrade

My old network server was a Pentium 133Mhz with 16MB RAM and Win 95 "Internet Explorer Edition". Worked well; but was slow at times. It has been replaced (I still have the computer) with a HP Kayak XA 400Mhz with 64MB RAM and Windows 2000 Pro. Wow; it's a lot faster....

What other computers are available? Describe your whole network for me. I think you could be slowing it down. All configuration (OS, server software etc) as well.

i would expect the original post to be like 7 years old, yet it was posted today. 400 mhz computer with 64 mbs of ram? Did you pick that off of a company throwing away their old computers? I think it's time for another server upgrade lol, get a dual xenon set-up and it'll seem it's goin the speed of light compared to your old set-up

First Replier (sorry didnt catch names); It serves a Mac Mini (OS X 10.3.9, 256MB RAM, 80GB HD, 1.42Ghz G4) and a older Acer Aspire 1878 333Mhz with 128MB RAM, Win XP Home SP1, 4GB and 40GB Harddrives... This computer dosent get used very often. The downstairs computer (HP Pavilion a720n with 512MB RAM, 3Ghz Athlon XP, 120GB, Win XP Home SP2) is not served by this server.

Here is the network setup.

1.) Line comes out of cable modem, and into a router. (Internet speed is around 3 MegaBits/s)
2.) Line from router into downstairs PC
3.) Line from router upstairs to Network card #1 on server
4.) Out of network card #2 on server and into a router
5.) Router from server goes to both upstairs computers.

The whole network operates at 100Mbps
I never have any slowdowns.

Second Replier; Actually the 400Mhz does a great job. Someone gave me the computer. At that time it had 98 SE and then was upgraded a while ago to 2000 Pro.

EDIT: Oh, server software. The server does not run any software; just simple windows internet connection sharing. It did run 602LAN for a while but that slowed it down.

Wow. I just did a bandwidth speed test on the Mac and I get 4.1 MegaBits/s.

How the fuck is it a server then? It's not serving asnything, it's a fucking gateway. It can be doing more for you that, it can be a file server for data you don't need fast access to, hardware firewall, spam filter, print server, fax server etc.

Your 333mhz PC shouldn't be running XP, it should be running win2000 unless you enjoy it running like a pig.

You would be better off turning your 'server' into a server as suggested. You don't really need anything to share the connection if you have a managed router. I would use it as a web surfing PC only or something basic.

If you're after network performance, use your fastest computer for server stuff, but it will use the most power.

Oh, and you're getting 0wn3d when you complained about AFs server speed.

I use it as a 'server' because Road Runner does not work with more than 2 computers at a time; with router or not. It is also a file and print server. The two cables heading up go to a printer on the top of the file cabinet.

BTW; there is no need to get pissy.

I have a 350 Mhz cpu with 128 ram and i use XP Pro and it runs alot faster than 2000. My dad's PC at 850 Mhz would be slower with 2000 pro. Thats because Win XP is able to strip itself down to match your cpu.

Don't complain about the speed of our server when no one else has a problem and you have a fucking moronic computer setup. Go and buy a 4 port ADSL switch with 802.11G wireless and NAT firewall all built in. Get something like a Linksys, D-Link, Draytek, Cisco instead of cheap Chinese shit and a few wireless cards. Retire your 'server' as a fish tank or run terminal services on another PC and use it in TS mode.

Yeah, to a point, but it very often screws up user interface effects and everything runs slow. XP is a resource hog, and what the hell else does it do to speed up performance? It has the slowest boot time of nearly any recent OS and the bulkiest driver set. You are dreaming. Go and run performance tests under both.

As you probably didnt notice; the switch is a Linksys; and so is the one downstairs. And Windows XP runs better than 2000 on the 333Mhz. I origionally had 2000 on it. I do not have money for a wireless switch.

I dont understand why you have 2 routers and a pc essentially working as a gateway/router all on the same network. All you need is is one router and plug the computers into it. File and print sharing can be done through a basic windows network - you have no need for a "server"
