96 crank no start

I have a 1996 cherokee country that is giving me a headache. About a year ago I was having problems with what we thought was the fuel pump. We replaced it and after it was replaced the car ran fine but it would take abnormaly long to crank before it would start. Now within the last week it just dies when you are driving. The engine just stops. When you try to restart it it just cranks. If I let it sit for an hour it will start and go about 10 blocks before it dies again. The longer it sits the longer it will run. I have no idea why it is doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 96 crank no start

change the crank positon sensor on top of your bell housing its only 2 bolts it cost about 30 bucks. let me know if that worked. i got stuck in the trail for 8 hours last month and mine would get hot and cut off i would wait a couple of minuts and it would run and cut right back off

When the fuel pump was replaced, was the fuel filter replaced also?

Re: 96 crank no start

Filter was replaced. I think I may have found the problem. The door locks went out also and when I replaced the fuse the starting problem went away. I think it had something to do with the anti-theft system in it. Now it starts but the idle jumps up and down when it is running. My husband thinks that it is the MAP sensor so we are replacing that today.

[check the map sensor before you buy a new one.
