young woman needs help!

I am just out on my own and my 2000 cougar is having a problem. my remote does not open anything and in the car. The red light also stays on. I was told that it is probably a door motor and it is expensive. I go to dealer today. Is there anything you would advise me to do first. I can't really afford the part. Since the doors don;t work from the inside either does that mean it is not the remote? Not much of a car expert so I need help.
