I got my B16a in!

There is another civic out there somewhere with a B16a. I got a first gen B16, and a lot of people recommend not to put that one in a fifth gen civic, but it was cheaper and so that is what I did. It came out really well, and damn it is faster than my last motor (D16z6). When I pulled onto the freeway the first time, I nearly cried.

The motor was OBD0 and my car is OBD1. I decided to convert my engine to OBD1, which was pretty simple. I just needed a new distributor ($148 shipped off of ebay) and I had my old P28 ECU reprogrammed by a friend for $40 to run the new motor. I just used my old injectors so that I wouldn't have to wire up a resistor box. Almost all Honda/Acura injectors are 240cc, with the exception of the DOHC VTEC H22's and probably some of the newer cars.

The wiring was not that different; the one thing anybody needs to know if they decide to do the same thing is that the thermosensor for the radiator fan is on the back of the block, not in the thermostat housing!!!! It is the round plug with two big prongs sticking out from it, just like the oil pressure sensor but that one only has one prong. There are six plugs on the factory wiring harness that are identical and easily confused!!! Make sure you label them or have a wiring diagram with wire color codes available.

I also had some trouble with the rear transmission mount. I used the B16 bracket and the Civic motor mount, which I had to modify. Where the long bolt goes through the middle, I had to shave off one side and put washers on the other to move the mount over about half an inch. I also had to cut slots in front of all three of the mount holes so I could slide the mount back about 2/3 of an inch and bolt it down there. Basically it would have bolted up just fine, but it wasn't quite in the right place.

Anyway, this motor is everything I thought it would be, and it is a motor that is much more worth building than the D series. I plan on running a turbo eventually, but the first thing I have to do is get some descent exhaust. I already am getting used to the extra power, and I want to see what this motor can really do!

I hope that other people try this motor. It may not be emmisions legal in all states due to it being a little older, but it is a lot cheaper and not really that much harder to put in!

Your B16a isn't any faster than the Si's stock D16z6? What happened to it?

Wow. I would still expect that to be faster than the D16z6 though. My motor came with a hydro Y80 from an Integra LS, which is from what I've read is basically the same tranny you have. If you look up the gear ratios, the LS tranny matches up pretty evenly with the D series Si tranny, which would mean you should still have 35 extra hp.

The cams.... I don't know anything about the automatic ones.

The ECU - I had my friend chip my p28 ecu for the D16z6. He put a stock B16 program on it, plus did a couple extra little things like disable the knock sensor so I don't have to wire it up and disable the o2 sensor heater because mine went out. Both things don't affect the way it runs at all, and it actually runs very well indeed. It was a lot cheaper than buying a new ecu anyway.

I don't trust "mugen", "skunk 2", etc. chips. You have no idea what they are exactly programmed for when you get them, and they certainly can't produce a generic chip programmed for your exact setup.

I would try finding somebody that can reburn the chip that is in your ecu with a stock B16 program. When your motor gets the proper amount of fuel, I think it will probably run a lot better.

The ECU is a Skunk2 ECU, with a Skunk2 serial number, but wha I'm going to go with is a P28 with the stock PR3 J01 rom on it.

Yeah, and auto spec cams are worth 150 HP.

I definetely need a YS1.

More than likely the reason your car feels slow is because you have the b16 mated to an LS tranny which is the worst combination you can get. The b16 already lacks low-end torque, and by mating it to an ls transmission with its long gears you will spend most of the time out side of your power band. The car will feel extremely sluggish and take a long time to accelerate. I think you should look into swapping the tranny for a si tranny or at the very least a GSR tranny.
