Our 96 Jetta gls has a clutch problem I believe. The car will run fine but if you hit the gas the RPMS go up while the car doesn't really accelerate. The car runs fine up to about 3000 RPMS and then the RPMS go way up. It seems to shift fine. Once in a while if you drop from 2nd to 1st it will gring a tiny bit. IS THIS A WORN OUT CLUTCH?? PLEASE HELP. IF IT IS WHAT IS A FAIR PRICE TO HAVE IT REPLACED? DO I NEED TO GO TO A VW DEALER?? OR IS A TRANSMISSION SHOP OK?? THANKS.

No, you can go to any mechanic and have it done, and it SHOULD cost less... to save a lil bit, you can go to www.thepartsbin.com and look up your clutch or just get the whole clutch kit. Might as well replace the throwout bearing and all while you are at it...
Yes, that is a wore or faulty clutch if it is slipping past 3K. It could just need adjusting as well, but I doubt that. Also, you shouldn't be throwing it from 2nd to 1st when the car is moving anyway. No transmission is meant to do that. BAD!!! Some trannies even have a sensor or a mechanism that prevent you from doing so... however if you push hard enough, you can still put it into the lower gear. Most Mechanics charge $90-100 hour labor... They charge a hell of a mark-up from cost on what they get the parts for. They usually give you a brake on labor if they buy the parts, and charge more for labor if you buy the parts... They have to make money somehow. -GL |
