idle problem with 86 si

hi guys, ive been reviewing the boards for over an hour and decided to post, i have a 86 lude 2.0 si and i have a rough idle problem, the idle will go to about 2250 and drop to 1750 rev and drop rev and drop, now the wierd thing is the idle will settle once the fan kicks in, once the fan stops the idle problem continues once again, any help would be awsome. ive heard things like, coolent temprature sensor, egr valve, idle air control valve, coolent levels, someone please help =] i cant stand the rough idle anymore and i know there is prolly someone here who has delt with the same problem, i love my lude and i donnt want to give it up from a rough idle problem.

Check all of your vacuum hoses (any hose that doesn't run coolant or oil). The idle system, among other things, is controlled by air vacuum. Then again it could be any of the above that you mentioned too. Hope you find it!

You might bleed the coolent sounds funny but try it there should be a bleeder valve on the thermostat houseing. Start the car open the valve and leave it open untill the coolent comes out in a stream. works best with the front of the car up so the air moves forward remove the rad cap and leave open and add coolent as needed.

Re: idle problem with 86 si

I had the same problem last year and it was really embarassing to drive. It moslty only happend in the cold when my car was warming up. All i did was change my thermostate and the the prob went away. Give that a try because its cheap enough that if it doesnt work you wont be loosing any money
