Head Gasket

Ok guys, i just bought my 95 Eclipse GS with 103k Miles on it. I notice the next day that it is leaking oil...i take it into O'Brien Mitsubishi and have it checked and they tell me that the Head Gasket is leaking oil, and it will cost me about a grand to fix. My question is Should i buy a head gasket / timing belt now on ebay and just pay for someone to install it, wouldnt it be alot cheaper, Also they said i need a new clutch, it obviously isnt the way to go to buy from a dealership is it? The cost to fix everything i needed fixed from them was over 2700 dollars without the timing belt. It included the Head Gasket, Rear Right Shock, Clutch, and Gas Gauge.....He told me the clutch for a 95 eclipse is going to run me about 550 bucks with the flywheel, yet i see one on ebay right now for 200 bucks with the flywheel, is LuK a good brand? A cylinderhead gasket = just a head gasket correct? I know i sound like a complete idiot, but like i said i just bought my first eclipse and i love it and dont wanna let it go... but if i cant fix it for alot cheaper then 2700 dollars i cant keep it. THANKS TO ANYONE WHO HELPS ME OUT!

Re: Head Gasket

If you know someone (shop) who can set timing and has good tools, It would cost you less than half the cost of the dealer to fix. Let me get some more info. ans I will try to keep you posted. As would everybody else.

Re: Head Gasket

also you'll probably want the whole cylinder head kit, just not the headgasket itself. then you'll get new intake, exhaust mani gaskets, valve cover gaskets, head gasket, miscellaneous stuff. also you'll need to get new head bolts if you replace the head gasket.

alot of times, dealers look for stuff that could maybe possibly have the slightest chance of going bad in the next 2-3 years. i wouldn't replace it unless it's broke. if your clutch still works properly and shifts fine, don't replace it. dealers will rip you a new one on shit like this. take it to a reputable shop and have the stuff done, it'll be cheaper. i wouldn't recommend putting on anything other than OEM though for gaskets, they don't seem to last as long.

Re: Head Gasket

arp head fasteners are about $80. gasket set is about $189, unless you go with cometic. mitus gaskets are prime for you, but topline also offers a great gasket kit of about $30 less.

just about everything he said above. And about the timing belt, do it then because it will save you from having to get it done later. It may also save you a bit more money.

Re: Head Gasket

-cylinder head gaskets KIT (includes head gasket, exhaust and intake manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, thermostat housing gasket, etc gaskets)
-cylinder head bolts (not header bolts) preferrably arp
-timing belt.
-thermostat
-1.2 gallons mixed 50/50 antifreeze

might as well do a damn tune-up while ya got it apart.

-5 quarts oil
-1 oil filter
-spark plugs
-fuel filter (do this while the head is off, it'll be 100x easier)
-clean the air filter
