No 3800??? that sucks!

I was looking over the specs for the 2006 Impala and saw no 3.8L offered. I had heard for some time that GM was phasing it out, but I hoped that it wasn't true.

In my opinion (which probably isn't worth much), I think the 3800 is one of the best engines ever produced. It's a 300,000 mile engine with normal maintenance, and produces respectable power and gas mileage. It capable of producing 32mpg without even trying.

I don't think nearly as much of the 3.5L, standard issue for the base model 2006's. I guess the addition of the 5.3 V-8 will be good, although only available, as far as I can see, in the LTZ and SS models which, of course, means you will need deeper pockets to own one.

I guess I'll be keeping my 3.8 for some time to come.

HAHAHAHA...

Ask about half the owners of 3.4 L Impala's... especially any of the ones in here.

They somewhat *did* phase out the 3.4, seeing how its not an option, but now its a 3.5... I assume (and hope) its a better version. As depressing as it is that the 3.8 is going away... at least they finally added a V8... FWD

YEAH!!! The 3.4 liter engine sucks...you think yours is fine now....just wait...i'm sure you will be complaining soon. It's a piece of crap motor....I think...this is my opinion...they are phasing the 3.8 out because it's not making them enough money on the maintance part......if your not having problems now with your 3.4 you need to starting looking for like coolant leaks and all that stuff so that you will catch them early....

I don't know of any company that would phase out a motor just because its too reliable... I believe its being phased out out of age, 3800 is basically the same motor they used in the 80's for cars like the Buick Grand National, modernized some, but still a pushrod V-6.

the 3.4 sucks balls. i love my impala but i hate the fact that it has no pick up until it changes into higher gears. i added a cold air induction kit and that helped a little but not much. the worst part is that there is no real way to increase the power on it. no one makes aftermarket parts for the 3.4. i used to have a 1990 cutlass supreeme with a 3.1 and that had more get up and go than the 3.4 does.

I have a 91 Lumina with the 3.1, Good running engine. Can't say it gets used much though. Backup-backup vehicle. Real boaty feeling though when you drive it. And lack of ABS, airbag and all those other technical goodies.

As far as the 3.4, it does seem that it has its share of problems among the posters here. However, I don't think there would be a cast of thousands rushing to join this forum to tell everyone they are not having problems. It would mostly be the ones who are having problems or just curious. So, when you look at the very few posts on this forum each day, there either has to be a lot of people with 3.4s that are computer illiterate or most of the millions of 3.4s are in fact not so bad. In my case, I am glad I got a 2005 3.8. I will agree, it is dated. When I look at my daughter's 1993 3.8 buick, looks real close to my 2005.

Re: No 3800??? that sucks!

3800 is a piece of shit. All you want is a nice V8 (LT, LS,ZR). This v6 crap is slow ,unreliable, gas consuming hog, more like 20ok miles running motor.

Some people just don't think before replying. A majority of Impala owners didn't buy the car in hopes of a big-car V8 Powerhouse like the 94-96 SS was. Although some of us do wish it was an option . For most it wouldn't be practical to have, which is likely why the 00-05 Impala's never had a V8 choice. V6 was plenty powerful for the average driver. And the 3800 series engine has been used for over two decades now, most can easily get 200,000 miles out of them if not more. So I have no idea what that guy was
