The federal government lacks the political will to stop Japan's whaling program, Labor foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd says.
Prime Minister John Howard has written to his Japanese counterpart urging him to scrap plans to kill more whales.
The move is an attempt to influence Japan ahead of a meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in South Korea next month.
Japan plans to double its yearly whaling quota and kill an extra 400 whales for what it says are scientific purposes, including humpbacks.

I don't have a problem with whales being hunted - I do have a problem with doing it in such a way that it endangers the species. I also have a problem if they are doing the hunting in your territorial waters.
If they want to hunt whales, there is little or nothing that anyone can do about it short of writing letters.

It's an interesting (and troubling) fact that there are still many practices harkening back to the early days that Japan (and every country in its own way) still haven't grown out of. There are still some Japanese fishing villages that fish for dolphins on a regular basis -- I'm not surprised that whales are still being targeted as well. Seriously though -- what the hell could Japanese scientists POSSIBLY feel they can still get out of whales that centuries of biological science and research hasn't already revealed to us? And why so many!? Common occurance of such a practice is something that one perhaps expects out of a fledgling developing country, but not a mature world power. There is just no good reason why whaling in ANY form should still be conducted. But then again, whether it's drilling for oil in nature preserves, flooding vital coastal areas with lethal amounts of PCB's, or bitching about and/or shooting coyotes intruding into backyards, far too much of mankind still doesn't apparently give two shits about the animals that were here before us. They're merely getting in OUR way (as opposed to the actual situation in that it's really the other way around) and both are sadly a far cry from the way it really SHOULD be -- a respectful harmony.
